Case Study: Resolving a Persistent Sewer Main Blockage in a Residential Area

Before

After

Project Overview

Pipe Doctor was engaged to investigate a sewer main plagued by recurring blockages. Our objective was to identify the underlying problem and implement a sustainable solution. Given the critical nature of the sewer main and the impact on residential services, addressing the issue swiftly and ensuring reliable functionality was paramount.

Project Backdrop

During our initial sewer cleaning and CCTV inspection, we discovered that nearby construction work had damaged the sewer main. Specifically, during the construction of a retaining wall, the sewer was struck by a post-hole digger. This accidental damage resulted in recurring blockages and considerable operational challenges for this sewer asset.

Unravelling the Challenge

This project posed several significant challenges:

  • Continual Use: The sewer main needed to remain in constant operation, making conventional excavation impractical.

  • Depth of Sewer Main: The main was located too deep for easy access through standard excavation methods.

  • Residential Access Constraints: Limited access through residential backyards further complicated the project.

Crafting the Solution

To overcome these unique challenges, we developed a strategic, multi-step solution:

  1. Initial Removal: The priority was to remove the concrete, large rocks, and debris obstructing the drain, enabling us to conduct further inspections and remediation work.

  2. Inspection and Diagnosis: Our thorough inspection revealed that the primary cause of the recurring blockages was rubble and rocks falling into the damaged drain.

  3. High-Pressure Cleaning: Given the limited site access, we utilised high-pressure water jetting to clean the drain, effectively removing the obstructing rocks and rubble.

  4. Confined Space Execution: Our team employed confined space entry techniques to safely and efficiently remove larger rocks without extensive excavation.

  5. Robotic Grinding: We used a robotic grinder to smooth out broken plastic sections of the damaged pipe protruding into the drain, addressing internal pipe damage without significant disruption.

  6. Final Reinforcement: The final step involved installing a resin CIPP (Cured-In-Place Pipe) liner to permanently restore the integrity of the sewer main. This advanced technique ensured a reliable and durable solution to the persistent blockage problem.

A Deluge of Benefits

Implementing our tailored solution delivered several key benefits for our client:

  • Immediate Blockage Resolution: By removing the obstructing debris and repairing the damaged pipe, we restored normal flow and functionality to the sewer main.

  • Minimal Disruption: Our innovative approach minimised disruption to the residential area, allowing daily operations to continue without extensive excavation.

  • Long-Term Reliability: Installing a CIPP patch provided a durable, long-term solution, significantly reducing the likelihood of future blockages.

  • Cost Efficiency: By addressing the root cause with advanced techniques, we reduced the need for frequent, costly maintenance and emergency interventions.
